Gil Alder

Gil Alder joined the WVCH as a volunteer at the beginning of 2016, when she retired as a Specialist Speech and Language Assistant at a local school.  Now as a Trustee she looks forward to being able to raise both the profile and the funds of the Charity in the local community.Since leaving college with a teaching qualification, Gil has worked in a number of areas, which have fired her interest in local history and, particularly, the often ‘larger than life’ characters who populate it.

Four years in a large reference library in South Wales helping historians and authors with their research started this passion and introduced her to the Victoria County History big red books. Then, on moving to Chippenham in 1983, Gil soon became engrossed in the history of Wiltshire, its people and landscape.  Jobs in the Civil Service and NHS required detailed local knowledge too. Having a husband who is also immersed in local history (and two twenty-somethings who may be interested one day) means that trips to the museum, a collection of local maps and an account with a second-hand book seller are a way of life.
